At Farrer’s, coffee is more than a drink – it’s a journey. Since 1819, we’ve been bringing the finest beans from across the world to our café in Kendal, carefully selecting and roasting coffees that showcase the craft of farmers and producers from every corner of the globe.

One of the joys of our trade is discovering new flavours. That’s why we’re excited to share our Guest Coffee range, a rotating selection designed to expand your palate and offer something a little different to your everyday brew. Whether you’re drawn to the clarity of a filter, the comforting richness of a cafetière, or the precision of a V60, our baristas will guide you through the tasting notes that make each cup so distinctive.

This month, we’re highlighting three remarkable coffees: a high-altitude Geisha from Costa Rica, a rare Maragogype from Nicaragua, and an award-winning natural process coffee from Burundi. Each one tells a story of place, people, and passion.

Costa Rica Batamba Geisha – A Jewel of the Highlands

Few coffees capture elegance and vibrancy quite like a Geisha variety, and this Costa Rican Batamba is no exception. Grown at altitudes between 1750 and 1850 meters, this coffee benefits from the cool mountain climate and mineral-rich soils that nurture its delicate flavour profile.

Carefully cultivated and fully washed, this medium roast yields a cup that is clean, expressive, and layered. The tasting journey begins with a crisp pear-like brightness, unfolds into soft candyfloss sweetness, and lingers with delicate touches of strawberry and honey. It’s a cup that feels both refreshing and indulgent – a balance that only a meticulously crafted Geisha can offer.

Best brewed with manual methods like a V60, filter, or cafetière, this coffee rewards patience, drawing out the subtleties that make it so unique. Think of it as the perfect morning brew for those who enjoy clarity, brightness, and a gentle sweetness in their cup.

Nicaragua Las Nubes Maragogype – A Family Legacy in Every Sip

From the lush mountains of Matagalpa, we bring you a coffee with a story as rich as its flavour: the Las Nubes Maragogype. This varietal is rare, known for its unusually large beans – sometimes called “elephant beans” – and its exceptional flavour potential.

Las Nubes, meaning The Clouds, sits in the Isabelia mountain range, surrounded by waterfalls and forested landscapes. Producer Victor Robelo is the third generation to cultivate this land. His family was displaced during the civil war but later returned to reclaim the farm, investing in sustainable practices such as low-water demucilagers and recycling run-off into organic fertiliser.

The result is a coffee that honours both tradition and innovation. This medium roast washed Maragogype reveals notes of blueberry, chocolate, and peach, with an overall sweetness that lingers on the palate. With a cup score of 85 and Rainforest Alliance certification, it’s not only delicious but ethically grounded.

Enjoy this one as a cafetière brew on a quiet afternoon – it’s a coffee to sip slowly, savouring the craftsmanship in every layer of flavour.

Burundi Kibingo Natural – An Award-Winning Delight

Last but certainly not least, our guest list features the Kibingo Natural from Burundi, a coffee that recently claimed a Great Taste Award in 2024. If you enjoy coffees that are sweet, fruity, and bursting with complexity, this is one not to miss.

Produced using the natural process, Kibingo offers a vibrant and luxurious profile. Each sip dances with flavours of dried cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, brightened by citrusy highlights and softened by apple-like sweetness. It’s a cup that feels alive – bold, layered, and endlessly engaging.

This coffee truly shines in a V60 brew, where its complexity is given space to develop. For those who appreciate nuanced flavours and a fruit-forward profile, Kibingo Natural is a must-try.

Brewing Beyond the Everyday

What ties these three coffees together is more than their flavour – it’s the care, history, and craftsmanship behind them. From Costa Rica’s high-altitude terroir to Nicaragua’s family-run farm, and Burundi’s award-winning washing station, each coffee reflects the dedication of growers who live and breathe their craft.

At Farrer’s, we’re proud to bring their work to your table, roasted with care and served with the respect each origin deserves. For us, Guest Coffees aren’t just a seasonal feature – they’re an invitation. An invitation to explore, to taste something new, and to deepen your appreciation for the world of coffee.

So next time you visit us in Kendal, ask about our Guest Coffee of the day. Take a moment to step away from the familiar flat white or cappuccino, and let your taste buds travel. Who knows? Your new favourite cup might just be waiting.
